# Sustainability Measures in Tourism

## Sustainability Policy

The Management of Hotel Alísios commits to being attentive to how its activities interact with the environment, the business community and the local community, assuming responsible management and actively and continuously improving the effectiveness of its Management System, with a view to total Customer satisfaction and pollution prevention.

It also commits to complying with legal requirements and other applicable requirements and to developing practices consistent with the environment, food safety and its responsibilities as a business operator not only from an employment perspective but also from social sustainability in the community in which it operates.

To meet the broader criteria of sustainability, including socioeconomic impact and the well-being of its employees, it establishes objectives and targets in line with the reference standards of its System and enhances the profitability of its business, based on the following 8 pillars:

**Quality**

Hotel Alísios, in the scope of its activity, has customer satisfaction and safety as its main focus, which is why it has developed mechanisms at the level of its service provision that enhance customer satisfaction and exceed their expectations.

Regarding the information that customers can access in their room, the A to Z Service Directory clarifies all the services that the Hotel provides, prices, schedules and usage recommendations.

**Food Safety**

In terms of food safety, it has developed internal control methods that monitor all food production, from the receipt of food products, their storage, cooking methods and reuse of unserved portions either by refrigeration or freezing as applicable.

The mechanism for receiving, analysing and handling complaints is based on permanent contact with customers and analysis of causes so that situations of dissatisfaction do not recur.

**Environment**

Hotel Alísios is aware of the impact of its activities on the environment, promoting and implementing management practices that minimise the less positive effects of these activities. Thus, it commits to properly managing the consumption of natural and energy resources as well as the waste it produces.

From this perspective, it has established the following guidelines:

- We install low-flow flow meters;
- We use energy-saving light bulbs in sensitive areas;
- We invite Customers to reuse towels and bed sheets;
- We invite Customers to save water;
- We adjust thermostats to more energy-saving temperatures according to weather conditions;
- We monitor tap leaks;
- We provide Customers with environmental information promoting reuse/recycling and waste reduction;
- We provide public transport schedules encouraging walking and reducing individual car use;
- Installation of a microgeneration system through photovoltaic panels;
- We reuse printed paper and whenever possible we promote electronic communication, with a view to reducing paper consumption.

Hotel Alísios has identified environmental aspects and classified its impacts according to their significance and triggers mitigation and improvement actions. From this perspective, it has a bank guarantee that covers any environmental accidents.

**Community Involvement**

Hotel Alísios works to ensure positive socioeconomic impacts, minimising and, whenever possible, eliminating its negative impacts.

It is the policy of Hotel Alísios to donate furniture, television sets, bed linen and other items that are no longer appropriate for Hotel use to local institutions such as: schools, nursing homes, hospitals and charitable associations, in order to promote their reuse.

Hotel Alísios also supports the local community in kind, promoting "Raffles" whose proceeds are donated to the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Albufeira; it also sponsors local sports teams with monetary contributions and the provision of sports equipment, among others.

**Promotion of Local Responsible Tourism**

Hotel Alísios is a member of AHETA (Association of Hotels and Tourism Enterprises in the Algarve), APAL (Albufeira Promotion Agency) with the aim of promoting and improving the socioeconomic benefits of the local and business community.

Hotel Alísios also commits to collaborating with local schools, in order to provide study visits, internships for students as well as job opportunities.

Hotel Alísios combines the tourism development of the Algarve region with the improvement of its service provision and environmental performance, actively involving its Customers, Suppliers and Employees. The promotion of internal training is a priority for achieving the hotel's success.

**Procurement**

Hotel Alísios prioritises the acquisition and promotion of products from the region, thus contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions resulting from transport and enhancing the development of the local economy. Also in terms of contracting, it selects its service providers from companies in the Region and ensures that, in the acquisition of equipment, capital goods, food, beverages, construction materials, consumables, facilities and services, preference is given to those that meet as many as possible and/or are relevant to the following conditions:

- Made from recycled materials.

- Can be recycled locally.

- Can be easily reused or repurposed by the organisation or by a third party they work with.

- Produced/obtained sustainably.

- Produced locally.

- From local companies.

- From small businesses.

- Have a reliable sustainability certification seal, such as Rainforest Alliance, MSC, FSC, etc.

- Delivered in fewer and/or more sustainable packaging.

- Energy and/or water efficiency.

- Low pollutant.

- Reduce the need for printing.

- Requires less freight/transport.

- Use cleaner, more resource-efficient transport options with low emissions.

- Reflect the nature, history and culture of the area.

- From fair trade suppliers.

- Minimises food waste.

- Minimises the use of disposable or single-use items, for example single-use plastics

That none of the species, nor any items made from them (for example, caviar from threatened sturgeon, shells, corals, furs and ivory), which are currently on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (International Union for Conservation of Nature), are captured or purchased to be served in our hotel.

**Employment and Personal Development**

Hotel Alísios recognises the importance of recruiting its employees in the region, enabling most salaries to be invested locally and thus providing benefits to other companies in the community.

We also recognise the importance of, in the long term, local residents remaining within the community rather than seeking employment elsewhere. We are convinced that this policy will help preserve our community and the hospitality characteristic of our hotel unit.

Hotel Alísios, within the scope of its human resources management process, prioritises:

- Equal opportunities - Equal conditions are guaranteed in the selection and performance evaluation process for all candidates/employees, with no discrimination based on sex, race or belief.
- Increasing the level of qualifications - In the selection of new employees, we prioritise the best professionals with the objective of increasing the company's potential. Internally we promote training as a mechanism for individual and collective improvement, adapting the Annual Training Programme to the diagnosis of personal and team needs.
- Integration, training and development – Guidance is provided to employees at all hierarchical levels for proper integration into the organisation, training and development for the proper performance of their duties and career development, as well as opportunities for technical, cultural, social, functional improvement and financial progress.
- Internal selection - We favour the professional growth and development of employees by giving preference to internal resources, facilitating functional mobility and multi-skilling.
- Rights to personality - All employees are guaranteed confidentiality in the handling of data, and each one can have access to their information on file.
- Performance evaluation - Maintain an efficient and systematic evaluation of team members, in order to ensure good use and development of individual capabilities, thus keeping alive a spirit of security at all levels.
- Adequate remuneration – The salary policy establishes fair and adequate remuneration criteria, considering individual merit and the local labour market situation.
- Maintaining a good work environment – Maintaining an environment of good relations, establishing human and material conditions adequate to good work performance. In human conditions, this includes the right of appeal, and in material conditions, this includes educational, medical-hospital and financial benefits.
- Communication and participation – Means and climate are promoted for the broad development of communications and information, and encouraging suggestions, in order to achieve full participation of employees in the spirit and basic objectives of the organisation, through new ideas, improvement of working methods and new business opportunities. All employees are aware of Hotel Alísios' Good Practices Manual.
- Disciplinary management – A document regulating disciplinary management has been prepared based on applicable legal requirements arising from the labour code and internal standards. This document is disclosed to all employees.

**Safety and Health at Work**

Following its concern for people working in the company, Hotel Alísios, within the scope of its policy, has also defined its concerns regarding safety and health, therefore:

- Manages significant occupational risks in order to prevent injuries, harm and damage to workers' health;
- Develops awareness-raising and training mechanisms to equip workers with skills in activities that may involve harm, such as manual handling of loads, contact with cold or cooking equipment, contact with electricity, vibrations or fires;
- Also promotes prevention attitudes related to workers' movements inside the facilities or on the way home, whether at the level of falls at the same level, at height or road accidents;
- Offers its employees a health card.
